I have never participated in a HPDE. I have a 2005 WRX that runs STX class at SCCA Solo. I feel fairly confident that the car is in good enough mechanical shape for this kind of event. However, my tires, Dunlop Star Specs, and brake pads, Hawk HPS, have quite a few miles on them. On average how much tire and brake wear can I expect during an event?

Hey Fred. Generally, most tech inspectors like for you to have about 50% of your tires and brake pads left. I’m not saying you won’t go through that much, though. It just gives you a good amount in case you need to fall back on something or in case you use your brakes too much.

The pads are a little on the not-so-aggressive side for a road course, so be careful with those on the track. Brake fade is a real thing on a road course and it can bite you at the time you least expect it. I would be easy on the brakes when you can and you would do well to make sure that you have cooldown laps in between.

For the tires, they should hold up fine. I had a buddy get 9 track days and about 15,000 road miles out of a set of RE01Rs. Given that these tires are in the same range, I would expect similar results. You should be able to beat that tire pretty good and still have a good amount of tire left. When you move up to a more aggressive tire as far as traction goes, you’ll notice that the wear increases and you’ll start getting less events from them. Many people prefer street tires for this reason.

    Hope that helped.
